Mountan Bike Cloud Forest & Highlands

 

Day 1 – Transfer in

The trip leader will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel in Quito or airport area.  Depending on the time you arrive, this day our trip leader will give you a briefing with all the details of the trip in order to have everything ready to start our adventure!

Day 2 –  El Chaquiñán and City Tour

 

The Chaquiñán is one of the most popular route with cyclists in the nearest area of Quito. It is located in the Valley of Cumbaya, northeast of Quito. The trail follows the old railway line built in the early last century, and includes some tunnels which once went by train, which is an overwhelming experience for those who ride this ancient route for the first time.

It is a perfect route to start our trip since it is located at a low elevation and it is an easy level ride. We will ride part of this beautiful trail, where you will enjoy the warm weather, villages, and nature that characterizes this area, with only walk a few meters from the trail you will see birds such as blackbirds, sparrows and hummingbirds.

After our bike ride, we will drive back to Quito and visit downtown to know its main cultural attractions. After visit the colonial part of Quito, we will take the TeleferiQo (cable car) to get 13.123 ft /4.000 m at the bottom of Pichincha volcano where you will have a panoramic view of Quito, its valleys and the surrounding volcanoes. (B/L/D).

Day 3 – Tandayapa Cloud Forest

 

 

On the third day, we will travel to the northeast part of Quito, which is covered by an amazing cloud forest. This is without a doubt one of the most diverse, high-adrenaline and beautiful routes closest from Quito. 

We will start riding at 10,826 ft / 3,300 m until we arrive to the Yanacocha area located at the border of the highlands and the cloud forest where we can appreciate many species of birds and very particular flora. This point is the beginning of a spectacular descend of almost 5,600 ft / 1,700 m descent over 30 km / 18 mi being witness of a spectacular transition from highlands to the cloud forest of Tandayapa.

After the ride we will drive to have lunch and settle in a cozy hostel surrounded by exuberant flora and breathtaking views. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sounds of nature, and also to have a walk in this incredible environment.

Day 4 – Mashipi Cloud Forest

 

This day, we will ride crossing great part of the first Natural Protected Area of the Metropolitan District of Quito. The route starts at Pacto village and goes through small villages of this beautiful and diverse region. During the ride you will see spectacular views of the cloud forest, biking beside gorgeous rivers to finally reach the Mashpi community where we will have a refreshing bath in the natural pools of Mashpi River and have a delicious picnic besides de this gorgeous river.

After enjoying this wonderful area for a while we will drive back to Mindo area to visit this famous little town, well known for being one of the most diverse bird watching areas in the world

Day 5 – Pululahua Crater

 

This day, we will drive back to the Andes in order to visit Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve. Pululahua is an extinct giant volcano, and one of the two inhabited craters in the word. 

The route starts at 3,000 m/9842 ft with a long downhill from a road on the edge of the crater that will take us inside of this it, passing along the Pondoña and Chivo volcanic remains to a final elevation of 2,100 m / 6.889 ft. Here, you will begin to climb through a dense forest until leaving the crater through the Yunguilla sector, definitely a great adventure in a magical place.

Day 6 – Cotopaxi Volcano

 

This journey starts in the Cotopaxi Volcano parking lot at 4,600 m / 15.091 ft with an incredible descent through the sandy roads which head towards the northwestern region of the volcano with a beautiful view of the Limpios Pampa and its surrounding volcanoes: Sincholagua, Rumiñahui and Pasochoa where the majestic Andean condor lives. After crossing the park, we will continue to the Santa Rita Hacienda situated in the fabulous remaining Andean forest until we get to Amaguaña.

Day 7 – Quilotoa Crater Lake (Hike Option)

 

To many, Quilotoa Lake, which lies inside an extinct volcano crater, is the most beautiful lake in Ecuador. The hike around the crater is an incredible adventure that will present picturesque landscapes and the beautiful way of life of surrounding indigenous communities.

Day 7 – Quilotoa Crater Lake (Mountain Bike Option)

We will travel to Quilotoa Crater Lake, located in the central Andes, an ancient crater which holds one of the most beautiful lakes of Ecuador along with very rich ancient Andean cultural traditions. 

The route begins in the community of Quilotoa by bordering the crater for a while and then descends along a dirt road which allows us to see the way of life and customs of the people of the community of Chugchilán. We will end by descending to Sigchos, a small town located on the edge of the Illinizas Ecological Reserve.
